A Long Overdue Update

Thanks to everyone who still visits this site, and apologies for the lack of updates.  I started this site back in 1998, so it will be celebrating it’s 25th birthday next year, which I can’t quite believe.  It still gets 500 ‘unique’ visits every month, and I’m still astounded that I’m finding ‘new’ Europeans & How We Live stuff all the time.  That backlog of ‘new stuff’ has mounted up somewhat, as life (happily) gets in the way still.  That said, I’ve been spurred on to do some updates after a recent shout out on Steve Hogarth & Ant Short’s ‘The Corona Diaries’ podcast (Chapter 123: Follow me into the Rainbow Room).  So, I’ve started by giving the Gigography page a thorough update – with lots of new gig photos, adverts, ticket stubs, posters and recollections.  My long term plan is to drag the site into the 2020s, by updating the hosting and formatting to show the collection off better.  However, I do like the charm of the ‘old school’ html pages – it gives it more of a ‘photocopied A4 fanzine’ feel.  So whilst I can still shoehorn it as add-ons to the original site, I shall.  I still have lots of pages I’ve half-started, so look out for the following soon:  An in-depth look at the band’s equipment, a comprehensive chronology of studio recordings (including details of lots of unreleased tracks), a mini-interview with Andy Qunta about a track from the late 1980s featuring both Steve & Ferg, more rare Articles, updates to the Discography with better scans, and details of Colin, Ferg & Geoff’s pre-Europeans band ‘Scotch.  That should keep me busy!

‘The Production Team’

New to the site are interviews with David Lord and Warne Livesey, the producer and engineer of Recurring Dreams and Dry Land.  A fascinating insight into how they worked with Europeans and How We Live to commit their unique sound to tape!  Enjoy!

Still on my ‘to do’ list is an Equipment Page, detailing all the instruments used on stage and in the studio!

Also coming soon... A page on the recent Esoteric / Cherry Red reissue of the How We Live – Dry Land CD.

New Lead Singer since 1989

Steve Hogarth joined Marillion 25 years ago!  Time flies eh!  I’ve put together a page inventively called New Singer all about how Steve came to join the band, with quotes from all those involved, plus lots of photos, many of which have been in hiding since 1989!  Hope you enjoy it.

Dutch Europeans Recollections 1984

Steve & Colin 1988

I’m on a roll, and finally getting round to adding more pages to the site.  Next up is a big update, courtesy of Dutch Europeans fan, Inge Kuijt.  There is a page of her recollections, including a couple of articles written for Dutch and French Marillion fanzines.  These include a great photo (see left) of Colin and Steve taken in London in 1988, towards the end of How We Live’s days!  I have also updated the Gigs pages with the full sets of concert photos from Delft, Amsterdam, Folkestone & Cologne in 1984!  Many thanks to Inge for access to her archive!

Euros Newsletters

Wow, two new updates within a month!  At last, the Europeans Newsletters are now available on the Articles page.  In the days before the internet, these photocopied A4 sheets were posted out to fans that had subscribed to the mail-out list.  I’ve added 22 new pages!  All four band members would often write a short piece, plus musing from Mark at Eccentric!  Enjoy...

The Red Bucket Tapes

New for the site is ‘The Red Bucket Tapes a page about Europeans and How We Live songs as used by Marillion and h’.  Using interviews from this site, and references from across the web, it’s a detailed look at the original songs, and what they became.

Steve's First Marillion Gig - 20 years ago!

In June 1989, Steve Hogarth made his live debut with Marillion at a tiny pub in Stoke Row, Oxfordshire.  To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this gig, take a look at The Crooked Billet page that collects together interview material and archive photos from that special show.
